Traditional search gives you ranked URLs. AI answer engines synthesize a direct response from multiple sources, cite their references, and serve it conversationally. What "ranking" means has changed: the signals that matter now are semantic alignment, vector proximity, and token efficiency.

The rendering gap

Googlebot spent a decade building a Web Rendering Service that executes JavaScript. AI crawlers skipped that step entirely. GPTBot, ClaudeBot, OAI-SearchBot, and PerplexityBot fetch the initial server-side HTML and stop. If your app relies on client-side rendering, AI bots see an empty shell.

Google Gemini: The Gemini User-Bot for real-time queries often skips JS execution — behaving more like ChatGPT-User than Googlebot. Don't assume Gemini sees your JS-rendered content.

What to do about it

Server-side render your content. The facts, specs, answers, and descriptions an AI would cite must be in the HTML before any JavaScript runs. This is now the baseline for AI discoverability.

Optimize for token efficiency. AI models have finite context windows. A typical page wastes 15,000+ tokens on navigation, scripts, and formatting noise when the actual content is ~3,000 tokens. Every token of boilerplate crowds out your real content.

But waiting for agentic AI to close the rendering gap is the wrong strategy. Sites optimized for today's crawlers are building compounding trust signals and citation history now.
